Senior Highway Engineer
Location: Office and Site-based (Flexible working arrangements available)
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support the delivery of a key highway improvement scheme. This exciting opportunity involves overseeing a range of civil engineering projects, with a focus on road safety and traffic management. Role Overview
In this role, you will be responsible for finalising detailed design drawings, preparing PCI documentation, and supporting the construction phase of a Towns Fund project. The work will involve footway widening, the installation of a new puffin crossing, and side road entry treatments. The project is scheduled to start construction in mid-to-late April, and you will oversee the construction phase, addressing any design queries and managing change events (CEs).
Key Responsibilities
·Assist the Project Manager in delivering highway improvement projects from inception to completion.
·Undertake engineering tasks including feasibility studies, detailed design, construction management, cost control, and project management.
·Develop design solutions using AutoCAD and Civil 3D and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
·Procure contractor services via frameworks and NEC contracts.
·Monitor project progress against schedules, quality standards, and budgets.
·Provide technical advice to clients and colleagues, ensuring collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
·Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, financial guidelines, and all relevant legislation.
·Oversee construction works, ensuring adherence to contract terms and resolving site issues.
Required Qualifications and Experience
·BSc (Hons) Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
·Valid UK driving licence (for site visits).
·Experience in all stages of design and construction of civil engineering projects.
·Proficiency in AutoCAD & Civil 3D for design and modelling.
·Knowledge of relevant design standards and regulations, including DMRB, TSRGD, Manual for Streets, and CDM Regulations.
·Experience with highway contracts, specifications, method of measurement, and pricing schedules for highway projects.
·Understanding of NEC4 contracts, public sector frameworks, and related methodologies.
Key Skills and Abilities
·Strong technical and design solution skills, with the ability to select appropriate engineering materials and methods.
·Proven experience in managing project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
·In-depth knowledge of health, safety, and compliance regulations (including CDM and Health & Safety at Work Act).
·Experience overseeing construction work, resolving site issues, and ensuring quality control and contract compliance.
Working Conditions
·Office and site based. Flexible working from home, office, or on-site locations.
·Regular on-site visits to live construction environments, including highway works and lone working.
·Interaction with contractors, colleagues, and the public in a challenging, dynamic environment.
·Ability to travel as required for site visits.
