Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Chartered Bridge Engineer to join a local authority in South Yorkshire. You will be responsible for managing and leading a team of 4 engineers, overseeing the design, maintenance, and inspection of bridges and other highway structures.

The main duties of the Chartered Bridge Engineer are:

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of 4 engineers in the design, inspection, and maintenance of bridges and other structures within the local authority area.
  • Oversee bridge inspections, structural assessments, and maintenance programs, ensuring all work complies with relevant regulations and safety standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership on bridge design, assessment, and maintenance, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required standards.
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, consultants, and other council departments, to ensure effective collaboration and delivery of projects.
  • Manage the planning and prioritization of work programs, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with the council's strategic objectives.
  • Prepare reports, technical documents, and presentations for senior management, elected members, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and industry best practices in bridge engineering.
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in bridge engineering, implementing innovations where appropriate.


About You:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a recognized professional body such as ICE or IStructE.
  • Extensive experience in bridge design, inspection, and maintenance, ideally within a local authority or public sector environment.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience leading a team of engineers.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and codes of practice in bridge engineering.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, delivering them on time and within budget.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant design and analysis software.
