Salary: £65,400 to £81,780 plus double matched pension up to 6% (12% employer contribution)
Location: London or Birmingham, 2 days in office per week. Occasional site attendance.
This role is an excellent opportunity to work on the largest infrastructure project in Europe.
Essential requirements:
- Chartered status (preferred), or significant, high-level experience in H&S leadership roles.
- Familiarity with rail systems, operations, or similar regulated environments (e.g. aviation, nuclear, defence etc.).
- NEBOSH qualification or equivalent in national safety and risk.
- Extensive experience in Health & Safety leadership, particularly in complex and regulated industries such as rail, construction, nuclear, or aviation.
- Strong understanding of H&S systems, with a proven track record of implementing safety culture and improvement strategies.
- Ability to influence and engage executive and senior leadership teams, with comfortable, effective communication at the SLT (Senior Leadership Team) level.
- Proven experience in developing and executing operational plans and strategic interventions across large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Excellent presentation skills and stakeholder engagement skills.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and implementation of the Health & Safety (H&S) strategy across a major infrastructure programme, including civil, station, system, and corporate H&S systems.
- Drive the execution of a route-wide safety strategy, ensuring alignment with key focus areas and commitments, refreshing and updating as required over the coming years.
- Engage and collaborate with senior leadership, including the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), to influence and support early interventions that drive improvements in health, safety, and wellbeing.
- Provide high-level oversight for the H&S operational plan, tracking and reporting progress, and ensuring commitments are met with pace across all levels of the supply chain and integrated project teams.
- Lead communications and engagement initiatives, promoting safety culture across all areas of the programme, including contractors and supply chain partners.
- Oversee the maturity matrix and develop strategies to continuously improve health and safety culture within the organisation.
- Monitor and track interventions to ensure alignment with safety commitments, identifying opportunities for industry-leading change.
- Represent the safety strategy in presentations and briefings, influencing and engaging internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Work collaboratively with focus area leaders and support teams to hold accountability, challenge progress, and drive continuous improvement.
This is a strategic leadership role with responsibility for guiding and implementing the Health & Safety strategy across a major infrastructure programme. The position requires a blend of high-level strategic thinking and hands-on engagement with various teams and stakeholders, including the supply chain and SLT. You will be responsible for driving forward the organisation’s commitments to safety culture, wellbeing, and operational safety, ensuring that safety by design principles are embedded across all aspects of the infrastructure.
The successful candidate will have a track record of leading complex safety strategies, ideally within regulated industries, and will be adept at communicating and influencing at the highest levels.
