Interview Etiquette in 2025: Is the Handshake Back?
In early 2022, we published one of our most-read blogs: “Interview Etiquette: The Handshake”. It explored how post-pandemic norms had reshaped our approach to personal space, physical contact, and those all-important first impressions. At the time, candidates were rightly cautious; face masks and elbow bumps were still fresh in memory, and many employers remained hesitant about returning to traditional greetings.
Now, three years on, we are revisiting that conversation.
A lot has changed, and it is time to ask the question again: Is the firm handshake back in 2025?
The Short Answer: Yes, But Be Mindful
The handshake, long considered a universal sign of professionalism and respect, has largely returned. In most interview settings today, a confident handshake is expected and often welcomed. It helps establish rapport, conveys confidence, and sets a positive tone for what follows.
That said, the legacy of the pandemic has left us more attuned to personal boundaries. While the majority of employers and candidates are comfortable with handshakes again, some people still prefer to avoid physical contact for personal or health reasons, and that is perfectly acceptable.
Reading the Room Matters
The key to navigating the handshake in 2025 is awareness. Pay close attention to body language when you enter the room. If the interviewer extends a hand, meet it with a firm, confident grip. If they do not, do not force it. A friendly smile, eye contact, and a polite verbal greeting remain entirely professional and respectful.
If you are unsure, it is absolutely fine to ask:
“Would you be comfortable with a handshake?”
This simple question shows emotional intelligence, respect, and adaptability, all traits that employers value as much as technical ability.
Why the Handshake Still Matters
Despite recent changes in social norms, the handshake has endured because it represents more than just a physical gesture. It signals professionalism, enthusiasm, and engagement. At Carrington West, many of our clients in the built environment sector still see it as a valuable part of the interview process, especially in client-facing, leadership, or commercial roles.
Best Practice Reminders
If you are shaking hands at interview, keep these quick tips in mind:
Stand to greet – it demonstrates respect and readiness
Smile and make eye contact – show confidence and warmth
Offer your right hand – fingers extended, thumb up
Grip firmly, but do not overdo it – two seconds is ideal
In Summary
When we first published our original blog in 2022, the workplace was still finding its feet in a new post-COVID world. That article struck a chord because it reflected the uncertainty we all felt at the time.
Today, the question still resonates, but the context has shifted. In 2025, the handshake is largely back. You should feel confident offering one at interview. Just remember, as always, to be respectful of others and adaptable to their preferences.
Because good interview etiquette is not just about gestures. It is about awareness, empathy, and making a strong first impression, handshake or not.
