National Engineering Day 2024 - Celebrating Role Models

Today is National Engineering Day 2024 and we are shining a spotlight on the incredible impact engineers have on society and aims to inspire a future generation of diverse engineers who can drive innovation and tackle pressing global challenges. Organised by the Royal Academy of Engineering, this annual celebration highlights the amazing work of engineers and, for 2024, embraces the theme "Engineering Role Models." This theme is about showcasing inspiring and diverse figures within the field, with the hope of broadening participation and shattering outdated stereotypes about who can become an engineer.

Engineering for Economic Growth

The significance of engineering cannot be overstated when it comes to the UK’s economic prospects. Infrastructure projects fuel economic activity, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for millions of people. Well-designed transport systems enhance connectivity and attract investment, while resilient energy and water infrastructure are fundamental to meeting future demands. By investing in engineering talent and fostering innovation, the UK can secure a prosperous and sustainable future.

Yet, with a current skills shortage in the industry, the challenge remains. The UK needs more qualified engineers to fill vital roles and support ongoing and future projects. National Engineering Day is not just a celebration but a call to action, to encourage more young people from diverse backgrounds to consider engineering as a career and to ensure that the UK has the expertise needed to build the infrastructure of tomorrow.

Role Models Are Inspiring, and Sometimes Surprising

It's fascinating to reflect on the role models highlighted by Engineering.com in their list of Top 10 Engineering Role Models. Carrington West Department Manager, Luke Clifford, works with highways engineers across the UK.

“I must admit, seeing figures like Hedy Lamarr, better known as a glamorous Hollywood actress, alongside more traditional icons like Nikola Tesla, was surprising. However, it underscores an important point: engineering breakthroughs often come from the most unexpected places. Lamarr’s pioneering work in frequency-hopping technology, for instance, has laid the foundation for modern Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, revolutionising how we communicate and work. Similarly, the impact of these individuals, from Alan Turing's computational advancements to Elon Musk’s innovations in electric vehicles and space exploration, has been nothing short of transformative.”

Each of these role models has reshaped the world in which we live, reminding us of the boundless opportunities a career in engineering can offer. It's a powerful message to inspire the next generation, proving that engineers come from all walks of life and can make a lasting impact on society.

Adam goes on to point out, that it isn’t just the famous that we should look to for inspiration.

“Such roles models are fascinating because their work has had a domino effect that has shaped the way we live. But the same is true of those working in the profession everyday. Engineers solve complex problems and interlink the multiple parts of our built environment so we can go about our normal business. To do that they have to constantly innovate, acquire new skills or break down barriers. One of the best parts of my job is hearing the pride an engineer has when describing their role in a project. What could be more inspiring to someone entering the profession than hearing their colleague talk about their part in building something that will be around for future generations?”

As we celebrate National Engineering Day 2024, let’s take a moment to appreciate the engineers working tirelessly behind the scenes. Their work drives progress, and with the right investment in skills and education, the UK can continue to lead in engineering innovation, delivering infrastructure that fuels economic growth and meets the demands of an ever-changing world.
