4 ways to stand out to recruiters - What are we really looking for?
When you're applying for jobs, recruiters can be a bit of a mystery. But the truth is, we're not just taking a quick glance at your CV and diving straight into discussing when you can start with our clients - we're looking for much, much more! Understanding this and tailoring your interactions with your chosen recruiter can boost your chances of making you stand out from the rest. In my humble opinion, here are the main things you need to consider about what we're looking for:
1. A Tailored CV
Even when it's a "candidate-led" market like we're seeing in the UK right now, we still work through so many applications (brain surgeon recruiters, wait at the back please....). These can range from those who are the perfect match, to a self-confident postman who feels like he's got the transferrable skills for chemical engineering. Because of this, we can spot a generic, rushed CV from a mile away! What we really appreciate (along with our clients) is when someone takes the time to customize their CV for the job they’re applying for, or at least tailor it towards the general type of roles you are looking to interview for. Highlight the experience and skills that are most relevant to the role and the company. It sounds so simple, but the amount of CVs I get where, after a chat, the candidate has done themselves a massive disservice with a rushed, generic CV is pretty common!
2. Clear and Straightforward Communication
Yes, we're experts in our market, but our market is recruitment! Now that could be in any industry, and over time a recruiter will pick up decent technical knowledge of their industry by osmosis, but 5 industry-specific acronyms per sentence and arbitrary overcomplication of a CV is not attractive or well-positioned when dealing with a recruiter. Sure, you'll get some that get what you're saying, but your chances of that are 20% at best! I've got 9 years experience in recruitment, but I've just moved internally into a completely new industry. Does that mean I don't know what I'm talking about anymore? No. But it does mean I've got a new industry to understand and apply my experience to! Hardly anybody, including me, wants to sift through confusing or overly complicated language on a CV. We appreciate it when you keep things clear, simple, and to the point. Whether it’s your CV or in an interview, focus on communicating your skills and experience in a way that’s easy to understand. Being able to express yourself well shows you’ll likely do the same on the job.
3. Cultural Fit Matters
It’s not just about your qualifications, so don't sit back on these and expect them to see you through! We're also thinking about how well you’ll fit with our client's vibe. Do your research on the company’s values, work culture, and overall environment (I mean that! Do your research!). If you can show that you align with what they’re all about, you’ll stand out. We're always looking for people who not only can do the job but will also mesh well with the team we're recruiting for.
Employers don’t just want someone who fits the role right now—they’re looking for someone who’s eager to learn and develop over time, nobody is the finished article! Whether you’re pursuing extra certifications or taking on new challenges, showing that you’re committed to growing in your career can also make a big impact.
4. Professionalism Counts!
Finally, how you handle yourself with us matters (so much!), and you should expect the same high level of professionalism, in return, without question. If you're not getting this from your recruiter (withholding lots of key info about roles, pushy and "salesy" approach with little-to-no substance behind it, then back out, you'll thank me later)! Responding to communications quickly, being on time for interviews, and being polite will all reflect well on you. We notice these little things, almost more than than your qualifications! We want someone who’s going to act professionally on the job and your interactions with us are the only basis we have for whether or not you are going to do that.
At the end of the day, if you know what we are really after, you can better position yourself as the qualified and able candidate to whichever recruiter you choose to deal with. Tailor your approach, communicate clearly, and show that you’re a good fit through your interactions, along with your CV!
NOW GO GET 'EM TIGER!
