Highways Design Engineer
Our client is looking for a Highway Design Engineer to join their team in Bedfordshire. This is a great opportunity to work with a leading provider of highway infrastructure in the UK, responsible for maintaining thousands of miles of roads, lighting assets, and footways. The role will support the delivery of road safety, active travel, and other highway projects, contributing to improved transportation within the area.
The Highways Design Engineer will work with a team of engineers and technicians to develop and deliver diverse transport infrastructure projects. These range from small city-centre improvements promoting active travel to major new highway infrastructure and sustainable transport projects.
 
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
 
·Design a variety of highway improvement and traffic engineering schemes in urban and rural settings.
·Collaborate with project managers, commercial, and construction teams to plan and deliver projects within budget, program, and compliance standards.
·Engage with internal and external stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
·Ensure designs adhere to national and local standards, applying sound engineering practices to deliver value-driven solutions.
·Provide mentorship to trainee and graduate engineers.
 
Skills & Experience Required:
 
·Proven experience delivering highways and transport design projects.
·Working knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Specification for Highway Works (SHW).
·Experience in active travel projects, including familiarity with Local Transport Note 1/20 principles.
·Proficiency in BIM/Digital Engineering tools for highway infrastructure projects.
·Understanding of construction processes, including buildability and traffic management (desirable).
·A relevant Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent, or a Foundation Degree/HNC/HND with substantial post-qualification experience.
·Actively pursuing Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with ICE or equivalent professional body.
·Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with a proactive approach.
