Job description

Carrington West are recruiting for a local authority client of theirs based in London. We are looking for an experienced Conservation and Heritage Officer to join their Planning Department. The role will be offered on an initial 3 month contract (Extensions likely). Due to the nature of this role requiring site visits you must be able to commute to the district when required. Working hours can be full time and part time.
 
The conservation and heritage officer's role involves preserving historic buildings, structures, and areas, and supporting teams in caring for places of cultural and historical significance.
 
Main Duties
·Provide advice (written and verbal) on the impact of development proposals (pre-application enquiries, applications, Listed Building Consents and enforcement) where there is an impact on the historic environment.
·Using archives, heritage legislation, and conservation standards for research.
·Communicating with planning officers, and giving technical advice to teams working on conservation projects.
·Site visits to assess historic buildings and structures.
·Engagement/ liaison with Historic England
 
Experience
·2+ years within a local authority working as a Conservation Officer
·Reviewing and advising on major applications within or effecting heritage assets
·Excellent communication skills and report writing
·Competent and confident in application meetings
·Good sound knowledge of heritage and conservation requirements and legislation
 
Key areas of experience include knowledge and experience in implementing legislation relating to listed buildings and conservation areas. You should also have experience working as a conservation officer in a local authority planning department or at an equivalent level in private practice. In order to successfully deliver the responsibilities of the role, you will need to have a Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area including Conservation, Architecture, Planning or Urban Design; and be eligible for membership of the IHBC.
